The digitization of business processes has an impact not only on efficiency but also on the environment.

Companies process thousands of documents every day: invoices, contracts, purchase orders, HR documents, internal forms, and approval documents. Every printed document means a consumption of paper, energy, and storage space—and often also time spent on manual processing.

According to available studies, a single sheet of A4 office paper has a carbon footprint of approximately 4.3 to 4.7 g of CO₂. With larger volumes of documents, the impact therefore multiplies rapidly.

To put it in perspective: if a company avoids printing 100,000 sheets of A4 paper annually thanks to digitization, this translates to savings of approximately 430 to 470 kg of CO₂. At the same time, this roughly equates to about 12 trees that did not have to be used for office paper production.

Digitization helps companies gradually reduce this impact by:

  • limiting printing and the physical circulation of documents
  • reducing the need for archival space
  • speeding up the processing of invoices, contracts, and other administrative tasks
  • limiting manual data entry
  • increasing traceability and control over processes
  • promoting a more responsible approach to handling corporate documents

At Z + M GROUP, we help companies convert both paper and digital documents into managed electronic processes. From scanning and data extraction to approval, validation, and data transfer to downstream systems.
